Turkey Day Run & Gobble Wobble 2011 - 6,000 Strong!
Turkey Day Run & Gobble Wobble Breaks 6,000 in its 34th Year Downtown
The 34th annual Turkey Day Run & Gobble Wobble set an attendance record for the eighth straight year, reaching its goal with 6,052 registrants before the gun fired at 9 am on Marion Square.
This race has grown every year and we are really excited to have crossed the 6,000-runner threshold,” race director Rob Wills said. “We feel like we get stronger competitors every year and we’re also excited to see more and more families coming out and making this a yearly tradition.”
The annual 5K also set a new record with 5,616 runners and walkers crossing the finish line. The 5,308 that finished the race last year catapulted the race into 28th nationally among 5Ks and made the Turkey Day Run & Gobble Wobble the largest of its kind in the state.
A.J. Fitzsimmons, 20, of Mt. Pleasant was the first to cross the finish line, clocking a time of 15:04 with several of his Winthrop cross country teammates in tow. Lauren Goss, 23, also from Mt. Pleasant, captured the women’s title for a second straight year with a time of 17:01. Goss is a professional triathlete plans to attend the Olympic Trials in San Diego next year.
Post-race festivities included an expanded beer tent, live music from the Blue Dogs, and entertainment for kids including bouncy castles from Charleston Jumpcastle, a Krispy Kreme dunking donut station, and photo opportunities with a myriad of mascots including Tom the Turkey, Piggly Wiggly’s Mr. Pig, and Cool Ray from the South Carolina Stingrays.

The Kid’s Fun Run reached its maximum capacity of 500 runners for the first time in race history. The race was broken down into age groups and everyone received a medal for their efforts.
Prior to the start of the race, the United States Marine Corps Color Guard presented our nation’s colors during the national anthem. The Turkey Day Run paired with the 1st Battalion 9th Marines, also known as “The Walking Dead” to host a satellite race in Helmand Province, Afghanistan for serviceman who couldn’t be with their families on Thanksgiving.
The Turkey Day Run & Gobble Wobble is organized annually by the Knights of Columbus, Council #704 with the goal of raising money for various charities serving the LowCountry. Last year the council donated more than $35,000 to a dozen different charities, including MUSC Children’s Hospital, Crisis Ministries and the Hospice of Charleston Foundation.
