1954-1955
Bishop England Football Team & 1955 Bishop England Basketball
Team
Those
of us who have participated in high school athletics appreciate
the memories of our successes and our failures, for those memories
remain with us as a reminder of our life's journey. High School
sports offer individuals a unique opportunity to participate in
a level of competition which is neither fanciful nor silly, but
exciting and demanding to the student and to the institution. As
a high school athlete, we play for our school, our team, but we
play for ourselves.
High
school athletics occupies an important role in the development of
the student athlete. We place an important emphasis on our children
participating in sporting activities because of the values they
learn and, subsequently, employ in their everyday life.
The P.N. Lynch Council No. 704 proudly dedicates the 2006 Turkey
Day Run and Gobble Wobble to the 1954 Bishop England High School
Football Team and the 1954-1955 Bishop England High School Basketball
Team. These teams, respectively, accomplished a feat that has not
been repeated in Bishop England history. The football team achieved
a record of 10 wins and 0 losses. They beat St. Paul, Charleston
High School, Myrtle Beach, Carlisle, Wade Hampton, Lake City, Walterboro,
Andrews, Moultrie, and St. Andrews high schools.
Many
members of the football team later distinguished themselves as members
of the undefeated men's basketball team. That team went 24 and 0,
beating such teams as the Summerville Green Wave, the Charleston
High School Bantams - three times, the Beaufort Tidalwave, the Rivers
Bears, the St. Andrews Rocks, the North Charleston Blue Devils,
the Chicora Eagles, the St. Paul Pirates, the Olympia (Columbia)
Red Devils, and amazingly enough, the College of Charleston Freshmen
Team - twice, and the Citadel Freshmen Team - twice.
The
football and basketball teams were lead by their Coach, D. C. Henry
(Hank) Witt. Last year, the school honored the late Coach Witt for
his accomplishments with a bronze plaque.
The
members of the 1954 football team included Jack Pitts, Ernie Jones,
Bubba McMahon, Walter LaTorre, Frankie Eaton, Skipper Griffith,
Fred McKay, Ronnie Barrineau, Eddie Coulter, Roy Barrineau, Jack
Pitts, Charles Ravenel, Tommy Vaught, Charles Rowland, Larry Duffy,
Buddy Rourke, Eddie Jones, Joe Lavelle, Joe Lanford, Jimmy O'Brien,
Mickey Robinson, Charles Collinsworth, Mike Hogan, Kenneth Cone,
John Saboe, Charles Miller, Charles Blanchard, Tommy Brown, Billy
Kelly, Danny Rohling, Joe Gorman, Gene Janikowski, Joe Matt, Francis
Clair, Tommy Finnegan, Tommy Fosberry, Charles Sirisky, and Ray
Morris.
The
men's basketball team consisted of Fred McKay, Joe Gorman, Gene
Janikowski, Walter LaTorre, Francis Claire, Frankie Eaton, Ernie
Jones, Danny Rohling, Charles Ravenel, Tommy Fosberry, and Tommy
Finnegan.
We
congratulate these men for an accomplishment yet to have been repeated
in the Lowcountry. We hope they will cherish their memories for
years to come.
